On 1-2 October 2015, SIPRI co-hosted the inaugural Life in Kyrgyzstan Conference in Bishkek jointly with the University of Central Asia (UCA), the International Security and Development Center (ISDC), and the World Bank. The conference brought together more than 40 international and regional speakers who gathered to exchange research and promote SIPRI co-hosted the third annual Life in Kyrgyzstan (LiK) Conference in Bishkek on 12–13 October 2017. During the two-days, the conference was attended by more than 110 participants, representing government agencies, academia, civil society, international organizations, independent researchers and the private sector.

We welcome empirical papers using panel micro data, especially the Life in Kyrgyzstan survey data, which is accessible at www.lifeinkyrgyzstan.org. However, we also want to encourage researchers to present macroeconomic studies with relevant topics of research.

On Kyrgyzstan’s history: Kyrgyzstan has a history of being part of the Silk Road. The ancestral Kyrgyz were nomadic, a culture which is still alive in parts of the country. In the nineteenth century, Kyrgyzstan came under Soviet rule which ended in Kyrgyzstan’s independence in 1991. Life here is not easy – short summers and unfavourable growing conditions make it hard to grow much more than potatoes and barley.
